Salt Spring Island Cemetery
Canada’s FIRST Public Natural Burial Cemetery – an exciting and transformative beginning.
Salt Spring Island Natural Burial Cemetery is now open to the public, situated beautifully on traditional territory of the Quw’utsun (Cowichan) and Coast Salish People.
Their team has done the incredibly hard work of establishing this cemetery that is truly off the beaten path. Their service to the community will be recognized on some of their neighbours’ hardest days.
From their site:
“The Salt Spring Island Natural Cemetery is located between the ocean and the hills, in the Burgoyne Valley on Salt Spring Island. Through farm and forest, down a winding lane, you will come to what looks like a typical Coastal Douglas Fir forest. Walk up the hill a little and you will find that amongst the stand of large Fir and Maple trees, is a burial ground.”
On top of it all they are dedicated to protecting the coastal Douglas Fir ecosystem that is at risk in their area and practicing sustainable burial practices.
We are looking forward to seeing their success replicated in communities throughout Canada where commitment to sustainability meets the energy and drive of the people who make these projects happen.
Our sincere and grateful welcome to Salt Spring Island Natural Burial Cemetery.
