Gathering in Victoria: A Moment of Connection for the GBSC Board

President Green Burial Society of Canada

Last month, a handful of our Green Burial Society of Canada board members had the opportunity to come together in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. With our board spread across the country,  truly coast to coast, with representation from nearly every province, moments like these are rare, but incredibly meaningful.

In October, I travelled from Ontario to spend the afternoon with Lorraine, Lacee, Cathy, and Christie. Even though Vancouver was drenched in rain that weekend, the weather kindly held off for us. The clouds opened, the sun warmed the trees, and we enjoyed a bright, gentle day exploring the green burial sections at Royal Oak Burial Park.

For anyone in the funeral profession who wonders whether sustainable burials options can take root in their communities, Royal Oak is a powerful and encouraging example. Their commitment to natural burial has been long-standing and highly successful, so much so that they are now planning on their 5th dedicated natural burial section. Walking their grounds, surrounded by B.C.’s towering trees, soft moss, and the quiet hum of nature, it’s easy to see why families are choosing this path.

Our time together wasn’t just about touring a cemetery, it was about connection. As board members, we carry diverse experiences from across Canada, yet we share a common passion for this conscious, sustainable end-of-life practice. Being able to gather in person gave us the space to reflect, exchange best practices, share stories from our respective regions, and further support the direction and growth of the Green Burial Society of Canada.

There is something truly special that happens when people with shared purpose gather in the same space. It goes beyond professional alignment. It becomes about meaningful relationships, mutual encouragement, and the collective energy that strengthens our bonds and efforts.

I left Victoria feeling inspired, grateful, and proud of this incredible team. These moments reaffirm why green burial matters, why community matters, and why our work continues to grow across this beautiful country.
